Barcelona are reportedly feeling positive about their chances of completing a deal for Athletico Paranaense forward Vitor Roque. The 18-year-old has been identified as the perfect candidate to provide backup to Robert Lewandowski, as he is able to take some of the load off the Poland international and may even be capable of one day replacing him.
The Catalan giants have already began talks over a potential transfer with the Brazilian club, with new sporting director Deco helming negotiations. Those discussions are progressing well, giving Barcelona optimism over the potential acquisition.
Vitor Roque certainly seems an attractive prospect for the Spanish champions. He started his career with Coritiba FC and quickly made it clear that he possessed talent far beyond his years. In fact, he was so impressive that he was signed by Athletico Paranaense in June 2019 and quickly integrated into their first team plans despite still being only 17 at the time.
Since then, Roque has continued to score goals and impress onlookers, netting nine times in 32 appearances in all competitions last season as his side finished eighth in Brazil’s Serie A. That form appears to have caught the attention of Barcelona scouts, who seem keen on making sure they add some strength in depth ahead of what promises to be a busy campaign for them next year.
The Catalan outfit are believed to view Roque as more than just an understudy for Lewandowski though; many see him as potentially having enough quality one day not only fill his boots but surpass them altogether if he continues developing at his current rate. As such, a deal could prove mutually beneficial for both parties should it materialize.
Though nothing is certain at this stage, Barcelona appear confident that they can complete a transfer for Vitor Roque if they continue negotiating with Athletico Paranaense successfully over the coming weeks or months. Should this go according to plan, then they will quite possibly find themselves with one of the most promising teenage strikers in South America come next season – an exciting proposition indeed!
